A traditional view of language learning has been to see the ultimate objective as the attainment of native-like proficiency in the target language. Although it is widely acknowledged to be extremely difficult to learn to speak a second language as if it were one's first, this has nonetheless long been seen as the ideal. In this view, if the production of an L2 user of English (or any other language) differs from that of an L1 user, it indicates a deficit in the knowledge of the learner.
However, a relatively recent trend in the study of English as a langua franca has been to problematize this starting point. Researchers in English as an academic lingua franca (ELFA) such as Maurane, Hynninen and Ranta (2016), point out that most users of academic English are not native speakers of the language and that their divergence from the native-speaker norm does not ordinarily cause a breakdown in communication or, indeed, difficulty on the part of other participants in the interaction.
From this perspective, the native-speaker norm (that is, the idea that the standard for good English is what a native speaker would produce) is highly questionable. If good English is defined in terms of how effectively it works to communicate content, rather in terms of how closely it conforms to the native-speaker norm, then many of the disadvantages which L2 users of English experience are mitigated.
