And when technical terms are unavoidable, why not choose ones that are easy for readiers to understnd and remember? Ironically, the field of linguistics is among the worst offenders, with dozens of mystifying technical terms: themes that have nothing to do with themes; PRO and pro, which are pronounced the same way but refers to different things; stage-level and individual-level predicates, which are just unintuitive ways of saying "temporary" and "permanent" (...) 

どうしても専門用語が避けられないときには，読者がかんたんに理解して覚えられるものを選べばいい．皮肉にも，言語学はこの指針に反している分野のなかでも最悪の部類で，煙に巻くような専門用語であふれている：「主題」は主題となんの関係もない；PRO と pro はまったく同じ発音なのに別物を指している；ステージレベル述語と個体レベル述語は，「一時的」「永続的」と言えばすむのをピンとこない言い方で呼んでいるだけだ．（…）
