Universities are bu[s]inesses. Students are customers. So say people who think they are being hard-headed and unsentimental and living in the real world. In fact they are none of those things. You only need to look at seriously rich universities. The richest universities on the planet these days are the great American private universities. And why are they as rich as they are? In a nutshell: because endowments. People give them shedloads of money because people believe in and care about what they do. And people believe in and care about what they do because they are seen to serve educational, scholarly and scientific values rather than commercial values. No one ever died and left their life savings to Walmart.
